A well-built timber deck should showcase the timber, not rows of nails or screw heads. Concealed fixing systems secure the boards while keeping the walking surface clean and uninterrupted. On this Melbourne balcony project, we repaired the frame, replaced damaged structural timber and installed new Merbau decking with a concealed metal clip system.
How the concealed metal clip system works
The metal clips are installed across the joists beneath the decking boards. The boards engage with the clips, so the fixing points remain below the finished surface. This creates consistent board spacing and avoids visible nails or screws through the faces of the boards.
This type of system must match the selected board profile and dimensions. Some fixed-pitch systems are designed specifically for accurately sized 90 mm kiln-dried Merbau. The timber, clip specification, joist layout and manufacturer’s installation requirements all need to be confirmed before work begins.
How CAMO edge fixing works
CAMO uses specialised screws driven through the edges of the decking boards at an angle and into the joists. An installation guide positions the screws and helps maintain consistent gaps. The screws remain hidden between the boards, leaving the main surface free from visible fastener heads. For dense hardwoods such as Merbau, the correct stainless steel fasteners and pre-drilling may be required in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
Metal clips and CAMO: the main differences
Fixing method
A concealed metal clip system holds the boards from below or between the boards. CAMO edge fixing secures each board with angled screws through its edges. Both approaches remove fastener heads from the visible face of the deck.
Board compatibility
Fixed-pitch Merbau clips can require decking of a specific width and moisture condition. CAMO edge screws can suit a broader range of square-edge timber boards when the appropriate tool, screw type and installation method are used. Product compatibility should always be checked for the selected timber.
Board spacing
The geometry of a metal clip system controls the board position and spacing. A CAMO installation guide also sets a consistent gap while the edge screws are driven. The required gap still depends on the decking product, moisture content, drainage and anticipated timber movement.
Repairs and board replacement
CAMO edge screws can usually be reversed to release an individual board, although access near walls and adjoining boards must be considered. A continuous clip installation may require a different removal sequence. Future access and maintenance should form part of the system choice.
Finished appearance
Both systems create a clean deck surface without regular rows of exposed fixings. The best visual result comes from straight framing, careful board selection, consistent gaps and accurate installation rather than from the fastener alone.
Why the balcony frame was repaired first
A concealed fixing system cannot compensate for a damaged or uneven subframe. After removing the old boards, we inspected the supporting structure, repaired the balcony frame and replaced damaged load-bearing timber. This provided a sound, straight base for the new Merbau decking and helped produce an even finished surface.
Which concealed fixing system is better?
There is no single answer for every deck. Metal clips can be an excellent choice when the specified clip is compatible with the exact Merbau boards and the frame layout. CAMO edge screws offer flexibility across many square-edge timber products and allow boards to be fixed individually. The right choice depends on the timber dimensions, board profile, subframe, exposure, access and the manufacturer’s requirements.
